L. A. Johnson (Sunfell)
People like to ask me where I’m from a lot. I guess it’s because I have one of those ‘midlands’ accents that really isn’t from anyplace in particular except maybe a broadcast booth. One guy tried to peg me to Philly, except that I’ve only flown over the place, but have never landed there. When people ask me that question, I tell them I’m from Earth.
My accent is an amalgam of all the places I’ve lived and people who have influenced me. Being a military brat (and veteran) and very well traveled, that would be quite a few people and places. All my moving and travels have instilled in me a sense of adventure, along with a zest for learning and intellectual curiosity. My brain is a hungry sponge, and it must be fed. Somewhere along the way, I learned how to write, and honed that craft into my current ‘voice’.
Because of all that travel, I’ve always been something of an outsider. This made my youth hell, but has turned out to be an asset as an adult and an observer of people and things. I seem to have a knack of seeing what others miss and coping with situations totally alien to most people. Living outside the country for a total of 13 years made me appreciate being American. And it has made me deeply appreciate the places I’ve called home.
I’m a cusp person, too. I was born in the cusp period between the peak of the Baby Boom and the statistical beginning of ‘Generation X’, but I identify more with my younger peers than my older ones. My military service was in the cusp period between the end of the Vietnam war and the Cold War, and I served in Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
My formal education ended at my receiving my Vo-Tech degree from the military, but my informal education will stop when they plug me into the ground. My interests are many and varied, but my trade/profession is computers and network systems, and desktop/user support. I’ve learned that a good techie is worth their weight in gold.
I currently reside in the heart of Flyover Country with two cats, too many books, not enough computers (or room) and lots of good friends. My skill at telling what my dad would call ‘lies and war-stories’ has landed me here. I haven’t decided if I’m a scholar or a rogue- maybe I’m a bit of both.
My main interests:
- Computers and technology
- Internet and online culture
- Metaphysics and religion
- Humanism
- Frugal living
- Food, wine, cooking, and gardening
- Disaster preparedness
- Science- especially biology and emergent diseases
- Science Fiction
- Permaculture and sustainability
- Medicine and Health
- Whatever else catches my attention
I have a Live Journal, and run one of the larger communities there. It’s a nice place to hang out.
